Blog Entry 2 of 14 Musings from a young conservative on the state of...
My name is Thomas James Randle and I am a young moderate member of the Republican party in Jefferson County Colorado. This blog focuses on both city politics and current issues, as well as the typical politics of Red and Blue. Issues City: Transparancy, Comprimise, Economic Improvement, Citizen Involvement, Helping Special Needs, Conservation. State/National: Transparancy, Property Rights, Fiscal Responsibility, Strong National Defense, Environmental Protection without Economic Detriment. I strongly resist social conservatism as I believe it interfers with what I see as the number 1 tenant of Republicanism: Personal Responsibility.

Real conservatives conserve the environment?

Recently while driving around I found myself behind a car most likely belonging to a liberally leaning woman which had an Obama 08 sticker, a Mark Udall sticker, a gay equality sticker, a pro choice sticker, and a few other catchy but possibly sacreligious quotes. One sticker really caught my attention. It read, "Real conservatives conserve the environment."

Now, I don't expect this person really knows much about political conservatism and what it means to those who practice it, but this sticker lead me to think about the National Party's stance on environmental issues and how things that the national leaders say may be doing more harm to the GOP than good.

About a month ago, John Boehner, the minority leader in the U.S. house was on M eet the Press discussing his stance on global warming and what kind of plan house republicans plan to draw up to counter the Obama administration's plans for environmental protection. Boehner responding saying comments such as:

"The idea that Carbon Dioxide is a carcinogen is perposterous"

"When we breathe out, we expel CO2, when Cows....do what they do.....thats CO2"

The second one confused me to no end until i realized he was speaking about cow flatulence.

The ignorance about basic chemistry and biology in these statements were a little frightening and I wondered why no one had prepared him to answer a question like this. I'll try to take it easy on those without the science background since I may underestimate the level of understanding of those without a science related degree.

The claim environmentalists have about CO2 emissions is that it transmits visible light but absorbs infrared. This occurs in many gases (O3-ozone, nitrogen, etc)that environmentalists call "Greenhouse Gases." The effect is similar to a greenhouse. The transmission of the light comes as heat. Some of you may have learned this in a physics or physical chemistry class. Increasing the amount of CO2 will increase this type of heating without any doubt among the science community. The real question is, is it any worse than the natural cycle of the earth that has occured for tens of thousands of years?

Boehners statement about carcinogen either clearly outlines that he doesn't understand the liberal argument, or that he doesn't know what a carcinogen (cancer causing) is and just threw out the word to sound more intelligent.

His second statement about cows shows a big confusion on his part between methane, which is expelled "when cows do what they do" and carbon dioxide, the "green house gas" liberals are worrying about.

I admit, there are conservatives in the house that have been working on a bill to counter Obama's over-the-top green tax as I like to call it, and the media, which clearly has a pro-Obama bias, is failing to cover that side. I would hope that the house republicans will start putting people who know what they are talking about, into leadership positions within the caucus, for the betterment of the environment, our economy, the pocketbooks of tax payers, and the National Republican Party.

I do not think he is over the top for making it a priority, I think he is over the top in his Big-Government solution to environmental problems. It does not take any courage to do what Obama is doing. It's all about where the political support comes from. He was expected to do these radical things before. A bold move would be to follow through on actual campaign promises and start funding faith based initiatives and lift the ban on Gays serving openly in the military.

If you think Obama is over-the-top by making our environment a priority, you should also take into account that this is the price we are all paying for electing the previous administration and ignoring scientific evidence over the previous administrations 8 years in office. The Repubicans caused far too much damage to the world's environment by not acting when they had the scientific evidence under their noses. Evidently some of you are still living with your heads in the sand. As for Al Gore, the facts were not Al Gore's that were shown in the movie, they were from top scientists around the world. I applaud Obama, it takes courage to make the bold moves Obama is taking for the future of this country and the generations to come.

My roommate from college, a very liberal biochemist who I met in some of my early classes before the Chemical Engineers split off, wrote a refutation of the movie with the basic thesis: If environmentalists want to convince the public of the dangeer of global warming and be taken seriously, Al Gore is a poor choice as a spokesperson.

I agree. I admire many things about John Boehner but scientific acumen is not one of them. Of course, the antithesis is that reknowned man of science and literature, Al Gore. As a geologist, I felt compelled to watch "An Inconvenient Truth." What was really inconvenient was the lack of virtually any truth. Seventy minutes of psuedo-science and "scientific conclusions" arrived at by non scientific groups and panels. What drivel! (You might take a gander at my recent blog on "nuking" CO2 emissions. Wonder if Boehner ever tried to hold a match to a CO2 gas emission versus a methane emission?

In a related note, I would like to point out, as anyone who looks at the Jefferson County Republican party website, that the party did not adapt any resolutions regarding environmental issues. This is great news for the environment, for pragmatism, and for JeffcoGOP. The local party will be on the right side of history for this. At the same time their platform focused very well on fiscal conservatism and responsibility which is a core value most Americans can side with. Therefore it is clear conservatives who value the environment will still oppose the over taxing agenda of the left on this issue.
