Blog Entry 20 of 49 The Lakewood Lowdown
Hi, I'm Erin Feese, a community journalist here at YourHub.com.
As journalists, we are always seeking to uncover the newsy, the exciting, the weird and the heartwarming stories going on around us. The greatest part of YourHub.com is that you can be the one to tell your story. In this blog you'll find highlights of the Lakewood and Edgewater sites, as well as the musings of your friendly neighborhood journalist. So go ahead, uncover what's going on around you, and don't be afraid to share what you find.

The future of journalism is alive and well

Although journalism as we know it is rapidly changing in the face of new technology (namely, the Web; it's a new experience for me to be "blogging" for you), it's good to know that there are kids out there who are eager to be tomorrow's reporters.

This was apparent at Youth Journalism Day, held July 27 at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton. About 50 kids from fourth to eighth grade came to learn about writing for a newspaper and what it is like to be a reporter.

YourHub.com editor Travis Henry led the group in a brainstorming session for "man on the street" ideas -- basically, good questions to ask to generate thoughtful opinions. Honestly, I was quite impressed: The kids were well-informed on current issues and suggested ideas such as high gas prices, the war in Iraq, the rising rate of homelessness, poverty in third -world countries ... The list goes on.

Read Travis' blog about the day here.

Then, my fellow YourHub.com staffers and I split into smaller groups to take the kids out to do actual assignments. My group was an energetic group of soon-to-be fourth graders from various elementary schools in the metro area.

After a boxed lunch (note: fourth-graders are entirely grossed out by potato salad and tomatoes) we set off to ask people hanging around the campus the question, "If you could go anywhere in the world for vacation, where would you go and why?" Luckily, the kids were sporting their bright orange reporter shirts, so they were easy to keep track of -- I don't think it would have gone over well if I had misplaced a kid.

My group did great; they were so enthusiastic, and we talked to a wide selection of people, such as a bus driver, a Navy recruiter, a maintenance guy, to name and few. And the kids said, "This is fun!" Hopefully, they got a little taste of what I like about being a journalist: Connecting with people and finding out their stories to share with others.

The kids all posted their stories to NextGen, which is a YourHub.com specifically for grades 4-8 (to post on the regular YourHub.com, you have to be 14, and registration is open to anyone. NextGen has a closed registration and they make sure kids don't post where they go to school and other personal details).

To read my group's awesome stories.
