Blog Entry 4 of 8 Jewel's Journal
Mom (Gail) took me to an evaluation in February, 2007. On our way there, I tipped my head real cute and asked, "What's an evaluation?" She said Denver Pet Partners was going to see if I can pass the temperament test for therapy dogs. No sweat! I was registered as a therapy dog a few weeks later, and Mom got me a uniform. My little green vest shows people that I've got an important job to do when I'm wearing it. Watch my blog for future entries about how the kids and I are doing!

A book, a dog, and a little girl
Contributed by: Jewel Underfoot Kirkegaard   on 9/25/2008

I went on my first literacy visit yesterday. I can't tell you the true name of the little girl who read to me, so I will just say her name is Jill.

When Gail and I arrived, Jill smiled at Gail, pet me, and showed us to the library, where Gail would be able to help her with homework. My job was to listen to her read. Once in the library, we all got to know each other a little. Nobody else was in the library except the three of us. Jill didn't have any homework this week, so she picked out a book and snuggled up next to me on a large leather chair.

"Corduroy" was the first book Jill chose. I sniffed it and looked at the pictures, while Jill turned the pages. It was a story about a teddy bear in a toy store. The little bear crawled off his shelf to look for a missing button. A little girl named Lisa bought him with money she saved. She sewed a new button on his pants, and gave Corduroy a new home in her bedroom. Check out Corduroy for children two years old and up at the Belmar Library!

Jill is actually a pretty good reader. She's in the second grade. Gail didn't ask her age, but we guess it might be seven.

We didn't have the first book finished yet when we were asked to move to the tutoring room. Somebody else needed the library. This was a bigger room, with more people busy doing homework and playing games. There were no large leather chairs for me to cozy up with Jill while she read. Gail and Jill pulled up two chairs at a table and I sat on Gail's lap. Jill finished Corduroy and left for a minute to return it to the library.

Jill read three more books in the tutoring room. The first was Never Say BOO to a Goose! This was good advice. I would also say never bark at and try to chase a goose, because they are huge and very scary birds. They chase you back!

Then Jill read Clifford, the Little Red Puppy; and Snakes! Jill knows a lot about snakes. She told us about one that visited her at her school. She even pet it. How can you pet something with no fur? I'm sure it's more fun to pet me.

The hour was over quickly. I'm anxious to see my new friend again next week.
