Baking with beer
Contributed by: Katherine Jerome   on 12/17/2007

Homemade gifts are the best, and this is a quick and easy one!

2-ingredient no-knead beer bread

2 2/3 cups self-rising flour
1 12 oz can beer.
Place flour into jar or large size baggie secured with raffia or ribbon, put into a gift bag with one 12 oz can of beer with the following instructions to recipient.
1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
2. Pour flour into a medum size bowl and stir in beer with a rubber spatula just until flour is moistened completely. Scrape into prepared pan.
3. Bake 50-55 minutes until top is lightly browned and the sides pull away from the pan and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
4. Cool in pan on wire rack for 5 minutes, then turn out onto rack to finish cooling. Cut in 1/2 inch slices to serve.
You can add 1 cup shredded cheese and 1 tsp. herbs of your choice if desired.
Merry Christmas and Happy Giving!!

I was talking to our own intrepid Bill Boucher the other night and we decided this recipe would be good baked as bread bowls and filled with cheese soup! Makes me hungry again just thinking about it!

I prefer the bottle to the can myself, as far as it being a gift. I'll bake one recipe, and assemble a bag to bring along as a hostess gift to our family Christmas dinner at my brother-in-laws house!

Karin...........this really does work. The self rising flour and the beer create the perfect leavening.

This has to be too easy to work. And yet you have a picture. What am I saying; of course I trust you.

I once used a can of "generic" beer. King Soopers used to sell it in a white can with black lettering that just said "Beer", and the recipe turned out great. I'll have to try one of your suggestions frank, in fact, I'll include a bottle of my son's favorite beer in his gift bag this year to really personalize it. Great idea!
