Blog Entry 5 of 32 In Between
Sunrise, Sunset..........and everything in between.

Dear Amanda
Contributed by: Katherine Jerome   on 11/18/2006

With Shelby's first birthday right around the corner, this milestone is for you kiddo. As a first time mom, your patience and love as you care for my grand daughter with everything you do for her, fill me up in a way that I didn't think possible.

When you lived with us while you were going to college, I got to know you in a way that most mother in laws don't get to experience. I never tire of our time together, and we always have lots to talk about and things to share and laugh at. More importantly, you don't blame my son's bad habits entirely on me. (most are genetic, some are paternal flaws, while I probably could have forced him to clean his room more often, and laughed less at farting and burping) We really can talk about anything, and we make great shopping buddies. We've had loads of fun shopping at Gordman's. Remember the times we filled the cart up, and then put a bunch of stuff back? For inviting me to your 'slumber parties' and not being embarrased when I actually came, How about our Arbor Mist parties. With the two of us and a bottle of Arbor Mist, our problems seemed to take on a lighter side, at least in the short term. Listening to Bill Withers sing " Lovely Day" and dancing like there was no tomorrow.....................

Thanks for not giving me 'crap' the way the guys do when I'm watching a " Christmas Story" over and over again when I'm baking cookies and quoting Ralphie for days at a time. Thanks for seeing who I am and liking me anyway, and for not thinking I'm crazy. Thanks Amanda, for everything. But mostly for being Jesse's wife and taking care of him, and letting him take care of you, and for being Shelby's mommy and taking care of her, because I know that I don't have to worry about her. I know that she'll be a strong woman of substance that will learn what is important. I see that because you model those behaviors for her already.

Your heart was so broken when you had to go back to work, and you questioned your decision at times. But I have to tell you, I admired you guys, and how you stuck with it and worked together and came up with a solid plan so that you could stay home. When your life became a daily pissing contest about who does more, and who got less sleep, and the poop, and the pee, and the this and the that. You guys figured it out on your own.

Being a stay at home mom is a hard job, but don't let anyone ever tell you that it is a thankless job. The payoff comes in bits and pieces. For a lifetime. I know you get that. I like that you ask for help when you need it, but can also tell me to buzz off in a nice way. I think there's an art to that, and the way you approach family issues is open and healthy. You're attitude is casual, fun, but serious when necessary. You're easy to be around and I love being around you.

The most unexpected thing for me being a grandparent is the fun I've had watching you and Jesse loving Shelby. No one ever tells you about that part of being a grandparent. Watching your kids love something so much. Now, that is what it's all about!

Makes me cry, Katherine. Your son, his wife and their child are hugely blessed to have you.

I knew you were the right person to ask for advice on how to be a good mother-in-law in the future.
