Blog Entry 7 of 32 In Between
Sunrise, Sunset..........and everything in between.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Contributed by: Katherine Jerome   on 12/19/2006

I had a babysitting gig Saturday night. My son and daughter-in-law had a Christmas party they wanted to attend sans baby. It would be so much fun. I couldn't wait. The ultimate stamp of approval, I was anxious to put my skills to work. Baby was bathed, p.j'd and happy to see me when I arrived. Only 45 minutes after dad and mom left till bedtime, not nearly enough time to soak in the ectasy of a baby at Christmastime.

She's been walking for a few weeks, and that's all she wanted to do. No holding or cuddling. No stories and singing. Just walking around and around and around. Around tables, chairs, toy boxes, desks ... everything in the room.

A complete breach of my idea of quality time. I became a nonstop spotter as we circled the dining room table over and over. This kid was not bumping her head on my watch. I knew I was in over my head when I looked at the clock. It was 7:20. Forty minutes till bedtime.

I was half asleep on the couch when I heard the garage door go up at around 10:30. I felt like I'd been drug through a knot hole, but put on a good act for the overly happy partygoers. The evening had gone without incident, no crying, at least from the baby.

I drove myself home, made a cup of tea and crawled into bed with visions of my little sugar plum dancing in my head.

Brings back memories of the chasing stage, Katherine, which as you know starts at the time of walking. Kids have all the mobility and none of the judgment at first. It can be exhausting. Glad you survived without bumps or tears.

I forgot how hard it is on your back to spot a wobbly toddler until I watched a friend's child.

Great entry. I love the "before" and "after" shots.
