Blog Entry 1 of 2 Returning to the Rockies
After two looooong and painful years in the crazy city of Philly, Shanna is making the trek home to Colorado, land of Mexican food, environmentalists, a golden dome, and the beautiful and wondrous Rocky Mountains. This blog follows her as she plans her return to Lakewood, the city of her birth, and her challenges and tribulations along the way. Fond memories of growing up in the foothills, lists of what she's missed about CO (and won't miss about Philadelphia), and random thoughts...what more would you expect from a Colorado College graduate?

And so it begins...

I've done it. I've set a date; June 25th. The date is imminent, and I cannot wait.

June 25th. This is the day I bid adieu to the "City of Brotherly Love," and begin the four day journey (with two cats to boot!) back to the glorious mountains and high altitude of Colorado.

Having been born and bred in Colorado my entire life, I didn't seem to realize exactly *how* different life outside the square shaped, friendly state of Colorado would be. Yes, I spend a few months studying in Germany, but I chalked down the differences to the differences in our cultures. Little did I realize that there are so many different cultures within our culture, and that the move of 1776 miles (ironic, I know) east to the city of Philadelphia would be a life altering experience.

My whole life, I've taken Colorado for granted. I was raised in Lakewood, went to high school at Chatfield (in Littleton), and then completed my bachelor's at Colorado College in the Springs. Each place was slightly different, but it was still Colorado; people who smiled when you met them on the street, a Starbucks or Chipotle on every corner, seven years (or more) of a drought, green bin to put cans and bottles in to be recycled, and the shining Rockies (the mountains, not the baseball team) looming in the distance. I've always loved Colorado, but it took me moving away to realize exactly how much.

In my past two years, I have been to exactly one Chipotle on the east coast (they just opened their first ones in PA). I have searched in vain for good Mexican food (Cheddar cheese melted in a tortilla with sauce poured over it does NOT an enchilada make!). I've tried to recycle, and have been met with blank stares, or mutterings of "you crazy hippy." I've spent over an hour driving around my neighborhood in search of a coffee shop (turns out, there isn't one, or a bookstore, within 25 minutes of my apartment). I've been honked at for stopping at a stop sign/stopping at a red light/not turning left on a red light/going "only" five miles over the speed limit/etc. I've battle mice, termites, and drunk guys trying to break into my apartment. I've gotten a ticket for making a left (on a green light) on the one street in the whole city on which you apparently cannot turn left from.

Colorado; I dream about you. I pine for you. I hope you anticipate my return with as much enthusiasm as I count down the days until I am driving on I-25 yet again (and let me tell you; two years ago, I never thought the day would come when I would utter those very words).

Until we meet again,

Shanna
