Will The Bearable destroy Team YourHub.com?
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 9/14/2006

When I talked to Sara Livingston, co-race director for The Bearable Adventure Race, about possibly entering myself as part of a two-person team from YourHub.com in the race, including a four-mile trail run, 10-mile mountain bike ride, orienteering course and 250-yard pool raft lake crossing, she said, "At least there's no juggling this year."

Indeed, that is good news. The race, now in its second year at Lakewood's Bear Creek Lake Park, is on Sept. 24. I called Livingston on Sept. 13, which gave YourHub.com Community Journalist Brendan Harrington and myself about 11 days to prepare for the event.

Well, we both have bikes, so that's good. And helmets. Aside from that, we're probably not what you would call "in good shape" for something like this. Or even "prepared."

Generally, Livingston said, entrants in The Bearable are 18 and older, but last year, an 8-year-old and his mother were one of the more than 190 teams from four states that finished the race. That made me feel better. But she described the course as "more spectator-friendly" this year, which means there will be more people watching us toil.

Essentially, what we're looking at is the bike ride, trail run, finding our way around with a map and compass and somehow paddling a pool raft across Bear Creek Lake, without separating our two-person team and also without passing out from exhaustion or whining too much. The actual course, designed by the Bear Creek Lake Park staff, will remain a secret until the race starts -- the crew doesn't even lay out the route until dawn the day of the race, Livingston said.

Lakewood Mayor Steve Burkholder will kick off the first wave of participants at 8:30 a.m. Livingston said the fastest team could finish the race in around two hours. Awards will be given to first-, second- and third-place finishers in Coed, Male, Female and Youth (any team with one member younger than 18) divisions, as well as for Best Costume, Ursus Horribilis (for overcoming the most adversity on the course), Sportsmanship and Lanterne Rouge (the last team to finish). Team YourHub.com will try to not win the Lanterne Rouge.

Actually, I dont really have a bike that will work and my right foot is broken. I see Lanterne Rouge written all over our sorry team. Think they'll let me ride my scooter on the trail?

I'll just stay home and nail a railroad spike through my hand. For me, same difference.
