When do the debates start?
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 11/29/2007

Several networks are covering media events called debates. The only part missing is the debate part.

It's really an opportunity for politicians from both parties to deliver carefully crafted and rehearsed one-liners. During all of this, we folks who live along Main Street USA aren't important.

Just making sure their sound bytes gets additional airings in the "analysis" portions of these "debates" is what they care about. The networks do analysis because they don't think we're smart enough to make up our own minds, or understand what was said. You see, they think everyone who doesn't live in Washington or New York is a dumb hick.

Notice to the networks, we know Hooey when we see it and hear it.

What makes the CNN "debates" especially noteworthy is how they sneak in political operatives from the Democrats during the Republican debates, then claim they were just as surprised as the rest of us were.

CBS was going to host a debate on December 10th. It's been cancelled because they were afraid striking writers would have picket lines, and Democrats never, ever, cross those. Not even for all the free air time.

On the Democratic side we have mostly "insiders" who already have jobs in congress. You know, the gang with the 20% approval rating.

On the Republican side we have a bunch of middle-aged white guys.

The whole process stinks.

But it's our fault. We let it happen. We elected these people. We keep on sending them back.

If they wanted to secure our borders, they would. If they wanted to do something about health care, they would. If they wanted to develop alternative energy sources, they would.

They talk about it every election cycle, then as soon as they've fooled us (again) they go back to livin' large in Washington, DC.

And talk about retirement plans! WOW!

Wouldn't it be cool to have real debates, where real issues are discussed. With candidates offering real solutions to problems?

One can only dream....

Here. Here. And then no one really wants to discuss the meat and bones of a topic. Why are disadvantage Mexicans coming to this country disadvantaged? Wasn't NAFTA supposed to help them...where did it fail? Health Care, unlimited care within a budget? Can that really work? Alternative energy sources...it's happening without Washington, thank goodness for capitalism and Americans knowing when to do the right thing. Hopefully Washington catches up fast.

I don't know who can present solutions to real issues either. There are always promise-makers who we can bet money won't honor them. I kind of liked Newt, because he seemed to have solutions, but decided not to run.
