Blog Entry 2 of 6 2007 Lakewood City Council/Mayorial Race Blog
This is what I think of the mayorial race. It will explain my postings and include responses to postings.

Rita's answers - updated
Contributed by: Allan Berger   on 9/25/2007

updated in response to rita's comments.

I am impressed that Rita has taken time to answer some of my questions. It is much more than Bob has done. At the ward 4 level, only Dave has responded (Adam said he would post something on his website, but he has not done so).

Mr. Burns chose to attack. Rita's supporters attacking me does little for me, also. If Mr. Burns is on her staff, I would encourage her to try to rein him in.
If not, Mr. Burns, please lay off the attacks of citizens, it is not helping your cause.

I do put a lot of stock in her getting the 4,000 signatures. That is no small organizing feat.

I also know that half the council is going to be gone. I did not know that Ms. Wise was term limited. After her outburst in January over Iron Horse Park, I am glad she will no longer be on the council.

I am concerned about Rita's attacks on Mike Rock. With a few exceptions, the city is being run well. He has a vision and it jibes with the vision of the current council. Who can blame him for supporting the same things the council supports?

We should be thankful that the main issues the city has are growth and traffic. Crime is relatively low. Taxes are bearable. The schools are great. The parks are enviable. People want to be in Lakewood and I hope we can keep it that way. We need to ensure that our business tax base continues to grow, while keeping Lakewood as the city it is. It is a tough balancing act.

We have a large, diverse city. I will have to weigh Bob's long service on the council, including being Mayor Pro-tem, against Rita's inexperience. I will also have to weigh the fact that, demonstrably, Bob has a vision that is not the same as the majority of people in Lakewood.

I also just wanted to add, that most of the citizens I know do not agree with Mr. Rock and the council on many issues. Three of them being the PIF's and TIF's that were given to Belmar, Wal-Mart, and Colorado Mills shopping centers. The taxpayers were mislead quite badly by the administration.

Mr. Berger, I wanted to apologize to you for my recent comments. I did not mean to sound as if I was attacking you. I am just very concerned about the direction this city is going in. Once again, my apologies, and respect to you sir.

BTW, I value the fact that you take the time to ask questions and participate in a meaningful discussion. But I think there are some issues that we should continue to blog about so we can clearly see the differences between bob and myself. Experience is a great starting point. Did you know that Bob was elected unopposed to City Council? Did you know that I worked as a land use paralegal? Have you checked in to my less high-profile fights with the City? Experience is important. What type are we looking for?

Allan, I have not attacked you. In fact, I commended your debate. Anyone else writing on the website does not speak for me. We both agree that facts and data should drive discussions. So let's talk about those. I think there are areas where we disagree how the City is being managed, most prominently in the area of Mike Rock. Which I would definitely like to speak to if we can engage in that discussion.
