Mayor wannabe's high school politics in Lakewood
Contributed by: Mikaela Morgret   on 10/9/2007

Wow, I'm a 20-something female, and I'm ashamed at how Rita Bertolli is representing the young professionals of Lakewood in her bid for mayor.

In August of 2006, she went to a City Council meeting and said, "I don't believe in representative democracy," (yes I'm a geek for watching all of this stuff) and now she wants to be the mayor. Isn't that a representative position?

Last month, in September, she went to a City Council meeting and said that a 3-year-old girl had been found murdered and dumped in Lakewood and that it was representative of how the administration doesn't care. Huh? First of all the little girl, God rest her soul and comfort her family, was not killed or found in Lakewood. Does Rita even know the boundaries of the city she wants to be mayor of? Then, to use this poor child's death for political gain is reprehensible! Shame on you Ms. Bertoli!

Now she has a friend call a news station and say that her opponent or one of his supporters slashed his tires because he supports her? Oh my gosh, is she still in high school? Not quite, she, like me, is in her mid 20s. She, however, lives in Mommy and Daddy's basement.

Hey! Being mayor of one of the state's best cities is not an entry level job. I think Rita should get some experience and maturity before we hand her the keys to the city!

As a 30-something female and Lakewood native I couldn't agree with you more. I've been listening to Rita's ramblings for a long time - you're not the only one watching those Council meetings.

Perhaps you should review the tape of the city council meeting, yourself, Ms Bertolli. It is exactly what you said. I've also been told by residents of Lochwood that you are campaigning there. Again, I'm not sure you even know the boundaries of the city you wish to represent. Lochwood is in unincorported Jefferson County. Study and learn from this civics lesson. I might even vote for you for a city council seat because it's rare for those of us in our 20s to even be interested in politics, but mayor? You still have some work to do. I'm just coming onto the scene in local politics. I plan to keep learning. Do you?

Wow, amazing how this hearsay spreads for the benefit of the people who want to smear me so that I'm not elected. You are stating absolutely mistruths and misrepresenting. No one said the girl was found in Lakewood. Where exactly do you get off lying about my speech? That speech can be viewed on lakewood.org.

Many people expected Rita to return to City Council the following session to apologize for her wildly inaccurate rant about a horrible tragedy which she had tried to exploit for her own political purposes, but she has not apologized. Apparently, this is another case of Rita making up her own facts. Should certainly make people wonder about her judgement!
