Mayoral election: Who will get your vote?
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com   on 10/11/2007

To say the mayoral election in Lakewood is heating up would be a bit of an understatement.

There have been allegations of tire slashing and sign-stealing, all in the name of politics. "The gloves are off," says a recent Denver Post article. Read the article here.

There is also a lot of heated debate going on right here on the Web site.

Lakewood voters are being asked to make a tough choice: Who will be the next mayor?

Advocates of candidate Rita Bertolli say she is the voice of change, the one who will take Lakewood in a new direction and bring the government back to the people. Bertolli headed up a grassroots campaign in late 2006 to stop the city from trading parkland to a private developer, leading to a special election that soundly defeated the swap. For more on that, click here.

Supporters of Bob Murphy, who has served on city council for 8 years and is currently mayor pro-tem, say he is the one with the experience to lead the city. He is credited with helping turn the dying Villa Italia into the bustling Belmar, among other projects.

However, Murphy's opponents say since he, like the majority of city council, supported the land swap, a measure that 57 percent of voters shot down, he will not represent the true voice of Lakewood citizens.

Linda Delay, the third candidate, has run a much more low-key campaign. She says she is running "to restore confidence in our city leaders and to have an open ear to our citizens."

So, Lakewood voters, ultimately it's up to you. Here are some resources to help you weigh the options before you cast your vote.

Thanks Joni. I was going off his profile -- which I now realize said 14 years on Lakewood City Council AND Lakewood planning commission, so he must have combined the two. Good catch.

Erin, Councilman Murphy has only served on City Council for eight years. Lakewood has four-year terms and has term limits of two consecutive terms. Just a friendly correction. Joni Inman Director Mayor and City Manager's Office City of Lakewood

I think it would be worth noting another item in the Denver Post: http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_7139446 They made a clear choice for Bob Murphy and a slate of excellent city council candidates, including Cindy Baroway to take Mr. Murphy’s spot on council. We can keep moving toward a positive future with the Post's endorsed candidates or Regress to an Imaginary Past with Bertolli and her crew: the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism.
