What's going on in computing, why it's important to master the productivity software on your computer and how to harness the power your computer provides you at work and in your home.

Staying safe online
Contributed by: John Scherer   on 7/23/2008

You're likely among the millions of people who each day get an e-mail from "The Exalted Assistant to the Potentate of Poo-Pah" letting you know that among millions of Americans, you have been chosen to help transfer a gazillion dollars for which you will be handsomely compensated.

It is of course, the so-called "Nigerian Scam." Guess what? Many people who should know better actually fall for it.

When we developed our popular Protect Yourself Online tutorial here at Video Professor, we worked with Cybercrime Expert and Author Jayne Hitchcock and she taught us a lot.

The good news is shopping and conducting all sorts of commerce on the Internet is safe, often safer than traditional shopping etc. The bad news is things like cyber bullying are on the rise, often through mean and anonymous postings. Or people creating fake online identities. Stalkers lure young, unsuspecting kids into bad situations.

You should also be actively involved in your kid's participation in the growing number of social media sites. You're not snooping, but protecting. Join the same sites they do. Be connected with them both in person and online

A lot of you may have a false sense of security about just how safe your computers are from outside hackers. Internet services provide protection, and it's likely you've invested in security software for your desktop or laptop computer.

There are hackers and bad guys who will find a way to sneak past it. How current is your computer security software? When was the last time you changed pass words on important e-mail accounts?

The Internet remains a great place to communicate with the world. But just like you taught your kids, look both way before you cross the cyber highway.
