CDC reports dangerous rise in Cyber Bullying.
Contributed by: John Scherer   on 8/27/2008

The Centers for Disease Control reports that Cyber Bullying against kids 10-17 is up 50% from 2000-2005.

Read the report here.

Frankly, I wasn't surprised at the findings. When Video Professor developed our Protect Yourself OnlineTutorial, we did so with Cyber Crime expert and author Jayne Hitchcock. She taught us a lot.

Cyber Bullying comes not just from adult predators, but other kids. Instant messaging, malicious posts on popular social networking sites and even text messages to cell phones are among the many ways your child can be bullied.

Kids are often hesitant to open up with you when they're being bullied, either in person or online. Bullies, sadly, have been around forever. Modern technology just gives them more opportunities to ply their trade.

Communicate with your kids, know what they're doing online and develop a comfort level with them so they're willing to talk to you if they have a problem.

P.S.
Thanks to Penny Parker for the kind mention in her column in the Rocky Mountain News.

There is a safe social and educational network for kids age 5-18 that requires a child's school to verify his or her identification before they can become a member. This is the unique way predators are kept out and stops imposter profiles. My son can still play games, IM, chat, email, build his won webpage and receive homework help. This site is content monitored 24/7 and cyber bullying controlled. Kids go to www.iland5.com and the site for parents is www.safewave.org. Both sights are free. Safewave is having a webinar September 25th at 2:00 with guest speaker Debbie Johnston.
