It's eating my car!

Now that we are all emerging from our pot hole obstacle courses, also know as the majority of metro Denver's neighborhoods, we seem to forget that we have all been driving through and splashing mag chloride and salt all over our vehicles. A good rule of thumb is to
thoroughly
wash your vehicle after every snow storm
.
However, that has certainly been difficult due to our back-to-back winter weather.
Magnesium chloride is a great addition to CDOT's efforts to melt snow and ice, but it is very hard on your antilock brakes, can do havoc on your vehicle's electrical system, and may cause dry rot on the rubber. Highly corrosive, mag chloride literally
eats into the aluminium and stainless steel
pitting and scarring your vehicle's surface. Use an automatic, conveyor or hand wash that offers an undercarriage wash or, better yet, a self-serve wash and pay particular attention to the undercarriage of your vehicle. Mag chloride and salt is lying behind your bumpers, grill, trim and every spot underneath your car.
Protect your investment. Wash your vehicle after
every
snow storm.

Wow, I never thought about the effects of the ice-melting chemicals! I have been waiting to wash my car until after all the snowstorms because I figure, "It's only going to get dirty again when it snows." Thanks for the advice, Amy.
