Bertolli is not the one for Lakewood
Contributed by: Thomas Glenn on 10/21/2007

Rita Bertolli's candidacy for mayor is surreal.

Everyway she turns, she sees corruption that must be fought and vanquished. Targets of her battle have included mayoral candidate Bob Murphy, mayor Steve Burkholder, the entire Lakewood city council, developers, landowners, and all the "Bertolli bashers" who challenge her on the accuracy of her "facts."

With her band of militants, she has even made a campaign issue of accusing (without evidence) candidate Murphy of stealing yard signs and slashing tires of Bertolli supporters. Similar tactics were used in her campaign against the Open Space land swap.

So far, the most unfortunate victim of Bertolli's crusade is the Rooney Valley Joint Masterplan, a good example of responsible community planning. Produced by the communities of Lakewood and Morrision, this plan took several years to accomplish, and included the interests of property owners, open space advocates, and other stakeholders to ensure the private land in the Rooney Valley was used in the most responsible manner.

Bertolli's political "career" has been built, not on accomplishment, but on attacking what she views as "corruption." As mayor, she would be the leader of the Lakewood political system that she says is so corrupt. Could she obtain significant cooperation from those she has so aggressively disparaged? A Bertolli administration would be one of conflict and little accomplishment.

Lakewood needs a Mayor who is a team-builder, one who promotes cooperation among all the interests within our fine city. Bertolli is not that person.

Note that Joe Sanchez removed his comment threatening to "look into my past." Interesting!

Accept the fact that you all lost the land swap election in a landslide.

If they get into office all of us who disagree with them will be "under investigation" as they so often threaten. "Your City, your voice" is the biggest joke of all because if you disagree with them, they threaten to sue you or "look into your past."

Mr. Sanchez. You may investigate my past, as you suggested, but you will be disappointed to find that I have no connection to the city administration, developers, landowners, etc.and have no personal vested interest in this election. I am an ordinary 35-year resident of Green Mountain who is turned off by the distortions and personal attacks conducted by Bertolli’s campaign. If I become a target of those personal attacks (as your veiled threat implies), it will be further confirmation of the content of my letter. If you are the same Joe Sanchez who is running for city council, Ward 4, you just lost my vote.

Mr. Glenn. Generally, the masterplan was good. I even think that trading part of Iron Horse Park for the ditch (or gulley, whatever) was not a bad idea. The problem is that the deal Mike Rock worked out with Carma was horrid. That is why it could not pass. Mr. Murphy supported this trade, as bad as it was. He lost, but is running like he won a great victory in Carma. He should recognize that the trade went to far and vow to get better deals in the future. If he doe not, how can we trust him. Bertolli is no panacea. But, I think I might well vote for a deer on Green Mountain, rather than Mr. Murphy.
