If I Could Have My Signature Back.....

As a supporter of Jefferson County's Open Space, I gladly signed the petition to put the proposed Rooney Valley open space corridor land swap to the electors of Lakewood. I believed it was the best way to make sure all the facts were available to make this decision. Starting with an open mind, after some research I have become a strong advocate of the proposed land swap.

I have also become disillusioned with the petition process because the leaders of the opposition have produced a steady barrage of misinformation and negative innuendo in their campaign.

They claim that the proposed open space corridor is a "ditch" or a "canyon" that makes it of little value for development or open space, while, in truth, it is mostly flat, gently sloping, and ideal for an open space park connecting other open space areas.

The campaign claims that the "real wildlife corridor traverses down the very land that we are giving away" (lakewoodvoter.com). This is obviously not true. It is neither the "real" wildlife corridor nor is it being given away. A casual visit to the area can verify this.

The campaign infers that the City Manager, City Council, the developer, and homeowners adjacent to the proposed open space have conspired against the people for personal gain. They support this position by such statements as "our City officials have broken the law" (lakewoodvoter.com) and "We should not be swindling away our parks because our City is looking out for the developers' interests instead of our community's" (lakewoodvoter.com). A review of the Rooney Valley Joint Masterplan, July 30, 2002, shows that a great deal of effort has been put into planning the entire area so that when it is developed, the outcome will be the best for the citizens of our area.

It concerns me that some Lakewood voters will be influenced by the misinformation of this negative campaign, and that the decision will not be based on factual, rational thinking. Therefore, if I had to do it over, I would not sign the petition.

Please visit the area and investigate the facts for yourself; then vote YES for Referendum 1.

We prevaied, 57% AGAINST the swap Jan 2, 2007.

I do not know nor have I ever met Mr Glenn. But kudos to you sir for doing your own research and visiting the site. Every Lakewood voter if they have never been to the area should visit not only Forsberg / Iron Spring Park but also the wildlife recreation corridor accessible near the intersection of Iliff Ave and Holman Circle before they cast their ballot next week.

Curtis What I meant is the facts about the land. To call it a "ditch" is not true. If people walk the area they will see which is used more. They will also see the connection the land we would obtain makes to Green Mtn and Beark Ck Lake. We (the people of Lakewood) win if we decide issues on facts and not distortions.

Hal, It's crap like "if the fact prevail we all win" that make me so suspicious of you and the people fighting so hard for the trade. The "facts" should be able to stand on their own, if they cannot then I doubt they are actually facts. And what is this "we all win" junk? If I vote against it does that mean I'm voting to "lose"?

I am not real concerned about the campaign being led by Ms. Bertolli. I am more concerned about the for campaign. If this was such a good deal that the vote was unanimous, it should be a slam dunk. There should be many compelling reasons for voting for it. The proponents should bring these reasons to the forefront. They have not done so. This concerns me. Either they are running a really crappy public information campaign or there is something rotten. Either way, there is really no reason to vote for this unless you really like hiking and do not have a dog.

As usual, all lies. See Colorado Wildlife Division letter to Lakewood. I can make you a copy if you like. And you misquote our side. Good job.
