Colorado School of Mines Bolsters Staff, Research With New Support From Harrison Western

Harrison Western and the Colorado School of Mines are teaming up to advance studies in mining and processing efficiency.

Thanks to the new sponsorship, CSM recently hired Dr. Corby Anderson for its first Harrison Western Professorship in the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Harrison Western also will sponsor several research projects related to the processing of mining waste products. The company has worked with CSM on research projects in the past.

Dr. Anderson has more than 30 years of academic and applied experience in mining, chemical, and materials engineering. Dr. Anderson holds a PhD in Mining Engineering - Metallurgy from the University of Idaho, as well as a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Dr. Anderson is an expert in the fields of mineral processing, waste minimization and recycling, and has an extensive background in industrial-oriented research. In his new position, Dr. Anderson will teach and conduct research in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy.
"We are committed to helping the mining industry operate as efficiently as possible," said Jay Lombardi, Senior Vice President of Mining for Harrison Western. "We already are helping mining companies around the world minimize their environmental impact, while maximizing their production. We can build on that success with the Colorado School of Mines. It will benefit stakeholders around the world."

HW Process Technologies, a division of Harrison Western, is a global natural resources development company with more than 20 years of experience in the engineering, manufacture, installation, and operation of process water treatment systems. These proprietary systems help the largest mining companies in the world reduce operational costs, while reclaiming millions of gallons of clean water every day. These custom-designed systems also can reclaim valuable metals and chemicals in the process. These powerful systems are treating industrial wastewater in the United States, South America, Europe, and South Pacific.

"When solving process water problems, for example, we specifically engineer the plant design for the unique operating conditions at the specific operation to maximize performance," Lombardi said. "As operational and environmental pressures on mining, oil, gas, and other industries continue to rise, our proprietary EMS® water treatment systems are more important than ever. We hope to push the research envelope with CSM to maximize the performance of this technology."
