Small business entrepreneurial spirit recounted
Contributed by: David Richards on 2/24/2008

I met Don Smith several months ago on the Internet, not an unusual occurrence for those of us that are involved directly or on the periphery of the new technologies that have had such a dramatic affect on the lives of so many over the last several decades.

It started out as a business arrangement, but evolved into friendship. Don operates a small computer consulting and servicing business and needed some help in the development of a web site.

Over the course of time, I became familiar with his story of the perils, joys and pride that are involved in operating a small business. I was a partner in a small business and my son is an independent computer programmer, so I have some familiarity with that world. Here is a short recounting of one of the small business stories from among the many that comprise the entrepreneurial spirit that is representative of America.

Don Smith of Lakewood, Colorado wasn't certain that he could make a go of it by himself, but he recalled the adage "no guts, no glory" and decided to separate from reporting to the boss to reporting to himself.

He had acquired extensive knowledge through a decade of employment in the high technology world and was now ready start his own business of servicing computers, setting-up servers, establishing local area networks, and installing and maintaining the hardware and software essential for the technology infrastructure of small to medium sized companies.

He also insured that computers were properly configured and that the necessary security features were employed to prevent potential catastrophes. He believed he could carve out a business niche in the Denver community by providing timely, dependable and economical services.

And so the foray into the unknown small business world began with a few customers and a dependence on word-of-mouth to add to his client base. Now three years later he is feeling a bit more relaxed, but is not totally comfortable.

Don said he has established a very loyal client base over the last several years, but a small business such as his requires not only studying and remaining current in new technological developments, but a knowledge of accounting practices, tax laws, advertising principles and the recognition that there is no such thing as an eight hour day when your livelihood hinges on immediate, responsive and dependable support. In spite of the challenges, Don takes pride in the fact that he has built a strong reputation and is continuing to build his business. Don has carved out a niche designing and servicing the computer infrastructure for local law offices and small professional businesses which have an absolute need for dependable and robust systems that can be depended upon to function reliably everyday.

He recognized the necessity for advertising and created a web site to provide information for potential customers. As an afterthought he developed a testimonial page so that comments from his current clients might serve as a reference for those contemplating the use of his services. Don states that, "I have worked hard to insure the satisfaction of my clients and I have unexpectedly been overwhelmed by their support of my efforts. Their help and assistance in lending their support to my efforts to build a larger client base has been wonderful." Philosophically, Don remarked, "I guess that's why I love this community, we're able to help and support each other."

Don's story, while unique to him, is in reality repeated over and over throughout our great nation. The opportunity to take a chance, build one's independence, share the joys of success and confront competitive realities is what builds strength and character. Admittedly it requires resolve, determination, motivation and the entrepreneurial spirit, but Don Smith possesses the attributes for success - the testimonials to his work say it all. Don's web site is at http://www.mediatorstech.com or you can reach him at 303.638.0636. If you need computer infrastructure support, you'll be helping yourself and Don will not disappoint you.
