That's Hot: Voices of Lakewood, Bob Murphy
Contributed by: Katherine Jerome on 10/13/2007

Sometimes, we make judgements and assumptions based on what we hear from others. Sometimes, we come to conclusions founded on herd mentality. Above all, we have the capacity and freedom to seek out information on our own, and in today's world news and information flies at us from multiple directions.

I decided to go the old-fashioned route and meet with Bob Murphy face-to-face, one-on-one. I found him easy to reach, very accessible, considerate of my schedule and equally straightforward to communicate with.

Bob Murphy says that listening is a key component to good communication. As a dedicated family man, successful small business owner and experienced city council member, Bob goes on to say that he prides himself in getting things done in a quiet effective manner and believes that effective individuals make good leaders. He adds that nothing makes neighborhoods more vocal and opinionated than a land or open space issue. In 1994, a parcel of property in his neighborhood was slated for change. As the issue escalated and tempers flared, Bob invited everyone to his home, but set very specific ground rules to try and arrive at some sort of resolution. A simple premise on his part; no disrespect of the opinions of others, and the chance for all neighbors to be heard. Healthy cities, moving forward in multi layered ways have issues of varying degree and importance at any given time. Land use and healthy growth is important, as is a multitude of additional components, which Bob will tell you means different things to different people. " Listening" is a key ingredient that has a direct influence on the outcome of any issue.

Bob defines the Mayor of Lakewood as the leader of the City Council. The City Council is the policy making body, with no one else at the city having this role. Council represents the citizens and their oftentimes diverse points of view. Bob adds that the people, the neighborhoods and the ethic of volunteerism in our community really make Lakewood a special place to live and raise a family. Our beautiful parks, open spaces and recreation is one of our finest features.
I concluded our conversation with this question. "What would be Lakewood's loss if you were not elected mayor?"

"Lakewood would lose a passionate advocate for neighborhoods, small businesses, and citizens, which collectively make Lakewood the special city that it is today."

Good for you, Katherine, for venturing back into local political discussion. Don't take the poor ratings personally.

It is not anger that Mike Burns expresses but passion. Passion to defeat Bob Murphy in his corrupt, self serving, attempt at the mayor seat. I am grateful for Mike Burns' passion. If it were not for him. we as a country, would fall victim to the elitists, more so than we have already.

Mike Burns, What are you so angry about? Live is too short and good health too valuable. Peace brother peace.

I'll respond to Burns... The land swap would have swapped 22 acres for 22 acres, such that a much larger connection would have connected Green Mountain park space to Bear Creek park space. No park land would have been lost. None. And, there are 8 to 12 water tanks already on Green Mountain - the high ground is the normal place to put a water tank.

Murhpy voted for the land swap! Is that protecting our parks and open space? Murphy endorsed lrtting Carma put their water tank in our park; Green Mountain/ Hayden park; to the benefit of the developer! Is he really freindly to our open space and a good steward of our parks? Iwould have to say absolutly and resoundingly, NO!
