Seniors and students connect
Contributed by: William Bond on 3/10/2008

Dancing senior citizens from Jefferson County were transported back in time when they walked through the doors of the Lakewood Bear Creek K-8 auditorium to attend this year's Sock Hop Swing.

Students, staff and Jeffco board members welcomed the community for an afternoon of 50's music, dancing, decorations and treats.

The auditorium was decorated with old vinyl records, a classic soda shop that offered rootbeer floats and ice cream and a vintage car that people posed in for memento prom pictures.

Everyone felt welcomed when the highschoolers inspired seniors to hit the dance floor, even teaching them some new dance moves.

"I just talked with a senior who attended the event and she said that it was a spectacular day seeing kids and seniors interact in such a positive environment and in such a positive activity," said Cyndy Whitlock, Executive Director of School Management.
"She loved the decorations saying they brought back old high school memories for her."

Student council leaders from Jeffco's 17 high schools planned the Sock Hop Swing annual senior citizen ball as a way for the generations to connect through music and fun.
