Doggone it, We're 30!
All are invited to celebrate 30 years of marching bands, carnival rides, entertainment and more! Lakewood on Parade is Friday, August 25 & Saturday, August 26. This summertime tradition promises fun for all ages (and dogs, too)!
The Parade
The highlight of the event is the parade at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in Belmar. Lakewood on Parade is honored to welcome two hometown boys as Grand Marshals: Keli S. McGregor and Paul Andrews. McGregor, a Lakewood High School '80 graduate, has been President of the Rockies ball club since 2001. Andrews, an Alameda High '83 graduate, is Executive VP of Kroenke Sports Enterprises (including overseeing operations for the Nuggets, Avalanche, Rapids, Mammoth, and Crush). Come, watch and applaud our grand marshals, local youth, community groups and businesses as they parade on by on floats, classic cars, horses and in marching bands. The parade begins in Belmar at Alaska & Vance, goes east on Alaska to Quay, then south to Virginia, and finally west back to Vance.
The Festival
The festival will be at Lakewood's Heritage Center (Wadsworth & Ohio) from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. on Saturday. Enjoy food, booths, carnival rides, kid's art activities, dog demonstrations and GREAT entertainment. A new feature this year is wandering entertainment such as Stretch The Nine Foot Clown and his Friendly Giant Puppet, The American Gypsy, the Yo-Yo Guy plus musicians, jugglers, comedians, a bagpiper, and even jumping stilts!
The popular Art Experience for Youth features hands-on activities provided by local artists, teachers, and entertainers. There will be pottery making, feather painting, computer animation and cartooning, Mexican mask making and Rockley's Music will have musical instruments to play, from ethnic drums to trumpets! Kids can be a part of the entertainment at the 11 a.m. Sock Hop, 12:30 p.m. Kid's Mystery, 1:45 p.m. Improv Show, 3:15 p.m. Storytelling and 4:30 p.m. African Drum workshop. And new this year -- Sidewalk Chalk Art for all to try!
The main stage entertainment is top notch for the 30th anniversary. Get on your dancin' boots for Country Friday Night! 40 Gallon Still kicks off with bluegrass, then the Angie Stevens band will wow you with her alternative country sound. Headliners the Railbenders, one of the most popular country bands in the metro area, finish off the evening with a yee-haw. On Saturday morning local youth take the stage: twirlers, dancers, gymnasts and martial artists. Then it's the grand finale and time to ROCK OUT! First, Hudson Street Salvage plays hits new & old. Then take six formally trained jazz musicians, add three quick-witted emcees, sprinkle in some funk and soul, shake & serve and you have the tasty sound of Yo, Flaco. Finally, up and coming Boulder talent Nina Storey will blow you away with her style incorporating pop, blues, funk, alternative rock, jazz and soul.
