It's all about gardens and gardening for the Lakewood Arts Council in May and June. In May, Lakewood Arts Council's South Union Gallery presents the beautiful and popular "From the Garden" art exhibit, featuring works done on the theme of flowers and gardens by Colorado artists. Top awards in this year's show include a pastel ("Pitcher and Roses" by Golden artist June Davis), an acrylic ("Three Roses" by Lakewood artist Shizuko Barbara Hanson), and a watercolor ("Summer Reflections I" by Boulder artist Catharine Woods). Over 130 works are included in the current show.
Complementing the art exhibit is a plant sale fundraiser to benefit Lakewood Arts
Council. New plants donated by local gardeners arrive each week through mid-June.
One of the highlights of the Lakewood Arts Council's busy season is its annual Garden Tour. This year's tour features six outstanding gardens and unique yards located throughout Lakewood. Included in the ticket price is lunch served at the South Union Gallery. Tour maps and tickets will be available in mid-May at the Gallery or online at www.lakewoodartscouncil.org . Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the event. This is one of Lakewood Arts Council's major fundraisers each year.
Established in 1988, the Lakewood Arts Council is a non-profit organization which serves Jefferson County. It sponsors over 70 cultural events every year, the majority of which take place at its South Union Gallery. Other venues used include the Miners Alley Playhouse in Golden, the Lakewood Cultural Center, the Clements Community Center, and Red Rocks Community College, all in Lakewood. The Council is supported primarily through memberships, SCFD grant funding, various fundraisers, and private donations.
Visit the Lakewood Arts Council's South Union Gallery, located at 85 S. Union Blvd, Lakewood (4 blocks south of 6th Avenue on Union, turn in by Wendy's) next door to Kobe An restaurant. Hours are 10 am - 5 pm Tues, Wed, Fri; 10 am - 7 pm Thursdays; and 10 am - 4 pm on Weekends. (Closed Mondays) For information, call 303-980-0625 or www.lakewoodartscouncil.org
