Colo. artists contribute to local park
Contributed by: City of Lakewood on 7/19/2007

Aviation Park at 1890 Teller St. is situated on property that has played a significant role in the history of the area. Once home to the Aviation Club, formed after WWII as a country and social club for people in the aviation industry, the property was redeveloped by the city of Lakewood in 2005 and aviation-themed elements were incorporated into the park design.

In 2006, Jon Stiles, artistic coordinator for the aerial sculptures, had a vision that artists would create kinetic flight-inspired sculptures in recognition of the history of the site. Because of Jon's dedication to the project and his contacts within the Colorado arts community, the aerial sculptures evolved from a vision into a reality.

All five sculptures were designed specifically for this project and are a significant contribution to public art. These pieces reflect the current visual and conceptual issues driving contemporary sculpture today. The pieces are on loan to the city for a minimum of two years and they will be returned to the artists at the conclusion of the exhibit.
