Support your neighborhood artists at craft exhibit
Contributed by: Barbara Benik on 10/29/2007

That's the message from the Lakewood Arts Council in presenting its annual holiday arts & crafts exhibit, now on display at the South Union Gallery through Dec. 22.

This year's collection of unique gifts and artwork includes the work of some new artists as well as the return of old favorites. Among the already-popular, new items are metal sculpted flowers made from recycled forks and spoons by Brighton artist Pam Goff and small, torched glass, one-of-a kind fish created by Lakewood artist Jill Knapp. Wheat Ridge artist Joey Morgan Michelle is showing glass and metal votive candle holders, giving an unusual look to a popular item.

Lakewood artists are well represented in the show. Included are large stained glass wall hangings by Darlene Hilburn, Aspen wood scroll-sawn ornaments by Robin Koelmel, terrariums by Barbara Mantei, fragrances and soaps by Karen Martens, hand woven fiber by Doug Sleevi, pillows and purses made from recycled wool by Jan West, and pottery and fused glass by Suzie White.

In a time when many buyers prefer to shop online, this little gallery in Lakewood lets you avoid the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping at the malls while giving you the opportunity to actually see, touch and select unique items for your gift-giving. The all-volunteer staff is friendly and eager to help. You can take your time shopping, enjoy lunch at one of the many neighboring restaurants, and support your local artists - all on the same day! The selection of work is large and diverse, with many very reasonably priced items. The Lakewood Arts Council invites you to come in, browse and take home that special gift for the holidays.

The Lakewood Arts Council's South Union Gallery is located at 85 S. Union Blvd, Lakewood (4 blocks south of 6th Avenue on Union, turn in by Wendy's) next door to Kobe An restaurant. Hours are 10-5 Tuesday-Friday, and 10-4 Saturday and Sunday. (Closed Mondays) For information, call 303-980-0625 or visit our website at www.lakewoodartscouncil.org
