Pandit Chitresh Das and
Jason Samuels Smith got to know one another jamming backstage at the 2004 American Dance Festival. Though each comes from a different cultural and artistic background, the two artists share striking similarities: both were child prodigies who began dancing and performing at a very young age; they have a similar approach to dance and a common passion for deep exploration into the possibilities of rhythmic improvisation; and finally, both artists believe passionately that the arts can bring communities together to raise awareness and create greater understanding. Their experience at the festival created the inspiration for this collaboration.
Kathak is among the six major classical dances of India and is one of the most dynamic theater arts in the world. Kathak is based on the concept of "innovation within tradition," and Pandit Das explores the boundaries of Kathak technique and performance. Samuels Smith shares a similar approach, and the resulting collaboration is a mesmerizing exploration of rhythmic improvisation.
The program includes
Traditional Kathak Solo, created, composed and performed by Pandit Das;
India Jazz Suites a collaborative composition by Pandit Das and jazz trio;
Rap and Tap performed by Pandit Das and Samuels Smith; and a Samuels Smith solo.
Appearing on stage with Pandit Das and Samuels Smith are North Indian classical musicians Pandit Ramesh Mishra (Sarangi); Jayanta Banerjee (Sitar); Salar Nader (Tabla); and jazz musicians Jeff Chambers (Upright Bass), Channing Cook-Holmes (Drum Set); and Theo Hill (Piano).
