Editor's note: Visit our
Faces of Lakewood and Edgewater page
, where YourHub.com staff and readers can introduce you to more people -- and a dog -- who make this part of the metro area what it is.
The Embree family came to the Denver area in 1963 from Red Oak, Iowa. Once in the Denver area,
Carol
, the founder of Turf and Trail, went to work for Honeywell for a short time then to Martin Marietta as an electrical engineer. In 1973, he and a partner started Turf and Trail; later he bought out his partner and remained working there until his death in 2001.
Mary
, his wife, did the bookkeeping until her death in 2002.
Mark
and brother
Scott
continue to run their business in a family manner.
Scott said he started working for the family business when he was 13 years old. What a job, cleaning the bathrooms. He later moved to service, then to parts, and now owner/manager.
Mark started with the company when he was 17 years old, being 5 years older than Scott. "I cleaned the bathrooms before him," Mark says with a chuckle. From there he cleaned the shop, then to parts, then on to sales.
The two now share the business in different roles, Mark sales/manager and Scott owner/manager, doing most of the behind scene type of work, personnel, and the paperwork, while Mark handles sales and inventory. They were able to expand into the next-door building in 2002 after their Dad's death, which was a dream of his.
This gave them both great pleasure as well as their Mom who was able to see realization of a dream her late husband had.
Mark and Scott Embreeare not only involved heavily in the Lakewood community, but in many of the surrounding communities as well. They have supplied the Parade of Lights all the vehicles to tow the floats since the start of that event, they think they may have missed one year but aren't quite sure. This year they hauled some 20 vehicles back and forth for the parade. They also supply tractors for the Lakewood Cider Days; Scott says "it is so much fun watching people's faces when they see how much weight a tractor can really pull." They are also very involved in the Lakewood on Parade event.
This seems like a lot of work, hauling this equipment around, I said. "Yeah it is, but we want to be involved in our community, and not just the Lakewood one, but others as well," says Scott. "That was the way we were raised."
Now a third generation is involved in the family business;
Scott Jr.
(20) parts and service, Mark's children
Trevor
(24) sales,
Nick
(20) repair and parts and the only girl in the family
Joslyn
(16) you got it, cleaning the bathrooms! John Deer for which they are an authorized dealer has grandfathered them in, which means they are allowed to sell more than a dealer that would be starting today. They said they enjoy being able to supply the needs of individuals as well as the many municipalities they supply equipment to.
If you ever stop in, expect a big smile a shake of the hand and the feeling that you have come to the right place.
Ball caps, Carhartt jeans, and tee shirts are in order for both you and them.
