Skaters of all ages headed to the opening of The Rink at Belmar on Friday, November 16 to "Skate with the Stars." The celebrity masks worn by the skaters proved that anyone can be a star, even though some looked less "star-like" as they tried to imitate celebrity skater Chaz Shanley, the 2008 southwestern regional intermediate men's silver medalist.
Everyone was dazzled by Chaz's set spins, axels, salchows and spirals.
"Chaz was absolutely incredible and the crowd loved his performance," said Brittany Maynor, assistant marketing manager for Belmar. "He was great with the kids."
While most skaters were hesitant to mimic Chaz's performance, they had no reservation about mugging for the camera wearing their Jay Leno, Martha Stewart, Donald Trump and Eddie Murphy masks. Several young ladies were so dazzled by the event, they literally had "stars in their eyes."
Although Eddie Murphy was not there in person, he was there in spirit. While recently filming his new movie
Nowhereland at the Rink at Belmar, Murphy signed an ice skate that was given away at the "Skate with the Stars" event. The lucky winner was Lili Olson of Lakewood.
"This was only the first of several events we have scheduled for The Rink this winter," Maynor said. "From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday we offer date night with two-for-one skating and two-for-one entrees from participating restaurants. At 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 The Rink will be hosting a warm clothing drive and dated holiday sweater night. Anyone who wears a holiday sweater or brings a donation skates free."
The Rink at Belmar is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through January 7. From January 10 through February 24, it is open on weekends from 4 p.m.to 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
