Learning to swim again
Contributed by: Theda Darling on 9/20/2007

When you have been married a long time, and you lose a mate to death, you know your life is forever changed. At first you are surrounded by the love of family and friends. But after the funeral, your friends go back to their lives. Then after a while, you feel the tension among your family. They love you, but they need to do their own family thing, and sometimes they don't feel like taking Grandma along!

If you are still working, It's a blessing. It occupies your day. But getting back into the social swim can be difficult. Who wants to go to a movie or to dinner alone?!

Thankfully, I found the Widowed Men and Women of America. Their motto is " A chain for unlimited friends." They have groups across the metro area, called Links. I was invited to Happy Hour at Chads on Union in Lakewood. They meet every Thursday from 4:30-6 pm. I was made to feel welcome right from the start. The group has activities almost every weekend, and a monthly dinner meeting once a month at the Lakewood Elks Club. I now have a wonderful bunch of new friends ! We have gone on cruises, bus trips and lots of fun times locally!

If I hadn't found this group, I know I'd be sitting home alone in front of the tube! Getting older and fatter all by myself! If you are widowed call me and I'll send y ou information. Theda 303-922-2037, or visit our web sight www.widowedamerica
