Two-and-half ton monument sets Lakewood Girl Scouts' achievement in stone
On Aug. 25, the Lakewood Girl Scout troop, which was instrumental in naming Colorado's first state rock, Yule Marble, in 2004, unveiled a permanent reminder of their accomplishments - a Girl Scout monumentthat sits proudly in Belmar Park. Area Girl Scouts and State Representative
Betty Boyd
were on hand to celebrate the occasion.
It took Troop 357 two years and 150 hours to help Colorado get its first state rock. Boyd also helped the troop by using one of her five bills during the 2003-04 session to officially designate the state rock. At the end of this process, Governor
Bill Owens
presented the girls of Troop 357 with the highest award Junior Girl Scouts can earn, the Bronze Award.
"As a member of Troop 357, I feel proud to see this monument, because it will inspire others to go above and beyond, like the girls in my troop. I believe what then-Governor Bill Owens said rings true about the Yule Marble project, 'The work of these ambitious young women shows that regardless of age, every citizen can make a difference,'" said
Kate Voight
, 14.
The Girl Scout monument is 4-and-a-half feet tall and made of Yule Marble donated by the Polycor Colorado Stone Quarries in Marble, Colo. Colorado sculptress
Connie Hendrix
also donated her time to shape the rock and carve the Girl Scout symbol onto the marble. Additionally, the City of Lakewood provided park space and a bronze plaque for the monument. Connolly's Towing of Arvada helped transport the marble monument to the park.
The monument symbolizes the completion of Colorado's red, white and blue patriotism -- Colorado's state mineral is Rhodochrosite, which is red; the state gemstone is Aquamarine, which is blue; Yule Marble is a brilliant pure white rock, quarried in a mine in Marble, Colo. Yule Marble was named after Colorado's Yule Creek, the namesake for 1870s resident
George Yule
. This marble has been used in many state and federal government buildings, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Colorado State Capitol.
The Girl Scout Yule Marble monument can be found in Belmar Park, north of Kountze Lake, and south of the police department. The monument is pure white, with the Girl Scout logo engraved in it.
