Walking to Health
Contributed by: Michelle Chapman on 3/6/2008

How many people do you know who have, have had, or love someone who has breast cancer? Far too many! In January I received a postcard advertising the Avon Walk fundraiser for breast cancer care and research. Participants will walk a marathon and a half in two days - 26.5 miles one day and 13 the next! That is a long walk! Participant also will each raise at least $1800 by the time of the event in late June to go toward programs to care for those with breast cancer and to fund breast cancer research.

I thought about it for a few minutes. Two years ago my neighbor and good friend had chemotherapy and radiation therapy for breast cancer. She is ok now, but it took a year out of her life, and she is still not back to her former self. Last year two good friends from my church had to go through the same thing. It is the disease that has most touched my life through those that I care for. I decided it was a good cause, and I need something to work toward anyway, so why not?

Here are the pros:
1) My dog Maize always wants to go for a walk,
2) If I could walk 26 miles in one day - I would HAVE to be buff! Right?
3) My husband needs to be dragged out of the house for some exercise - if he thinks he is helping me, maybe he'll come along?
4) There must be enough people in the front range who will help me do this by contributing a few dollars!
5) It will help raise money for an excellent cause that will most certainly benefit someone close to someone I care about!

Cons?
1) It's winter time and cold out.

No contest. It isn't even that cold out most days!

It's been seven weeks now! You can read about the whole journey on my web site. It is a continuing adventure! First I had to find some good shoes. After 3 miles, my good old LL Bean snow boots caused my feet to go numb! Now, I have settled on Keen hiking boots! Boulder Running Shoe store sold me some extremely expensive walking shoes that wore out the ends of my toes. Booo! I'll try to exchange them for a longer set. Do you think they will oblige me?

Since I started this endeavor I have lost 7 pounds, my husband has normalized his blood pressure, Maize has become the most frenetic dog alive, and I've raised over $1000 toward my goal! All good outcomes! (except maybe the bounciness...)

Happy Trails!
