The Friends of Paha board of directors and the students of the Creighton Middle School Honor Society joined together to bring an evening of magic by
Garry Carson
&
Kelsey Kara
on March 18 at Creighton Middle School. This charity magic show benefitted Camp Paha, a day camp for children with disabilities, and the Creighton Middle School Honor Society. The students and board members worked diligently together to sell tickets, find event and show sponsors, and run the concession stand for the event. Students greeted guests, took tickets and distributed programs.
The show was full of mind-boggling illusions, genuine magic and knee-slapping comedy for children and adults. Garry Carson recruited volunteers from the audience to assist with several magic tricks. A 6-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl pulled magic coins out of thin air and let them clink into a metal bucket. The 4-year-old girl also learned to perform her own magic trick, pulling an egg from an empty black bag. The audience roared with applause when she accomplished the trick.
Another crowd pleaser was the 5-month-old leopard,
Raja
. She jumped and flipped her way into the hearts of all the kids in the audience. Carson wowed the crowd and baffled the volunteer by performing close up magic. The audience could see the trick, but not the lovely female volunteer having the magic performed right in front of her. Each time Carson wadded up a piece of toilet paper, hid it in his hands and then on the count of three made it disappear by throwing it over the volunteer's shoulder. The audience roared with laughter and the volunteer was aghast when she saw where the wads of paper went.
Over 275 families and students attended the event. Almost $3,000 was raised. All proceeds from the tickets and concession sales will be shared equally by Friends of Paha and the Creighton Middle School Honor Society.
Friends of Paha dedicates their fundraising efforts to Camp Paha, a day camp for children and young adults with physical, developmental, emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities ages 6-25 .Camp Paha is held for 7 weeks each summer at an elementary school in Lakewood. Campers are able to participate in arts, crafts, sports, games, music, drama, nature exploration, outdoor living skills and outings into the community all adapted to fit the needs and abilities of the campers. The funds earned on March 18will go toward the operational costs of the camp and camperships. Friends of Paha's fundraising goal for 2008 is $80,000.
Creighton Middle School Honor Society will use their portion of the funds to hold their induction ceremony and banquet for the honor students and their families. The National Junior Honor Society club has just been re-established as an educational and service organization at Creighton Middle School. Each honor student is required to maintain their grades at an honor level and complete a minimum amount of service and volunteer hours in their community.
