Without a doubt, the signature event of the Buffalo Bill Days celebration in Golden each year is the Best of the West Parade. This event actually began when riders from the Buffalo Bill Saddle Club were asked to ride though downtown Golden after their annual trek to the top of Lookout Mountain in the 1960's. Thus was born the Buffalo Bill Days Best of the West Parade, which grew over the years into the Buffalo Bill Days multi-day celebration.
This year's parade takes place on Saturday, July 26th beginning promptly at 10AM and will be led by Grand Marshals and Honored Guests that will BE named later. The route is on Washington Avenue, Golden's main drag, starting just north of 10th Street and ending at 13th Street. The parade is hoping for about 75 entries consisting of non-profit organizations, fire trucks, animals, antique bike riders, plenty of horses with riders in western garb or pulling wagons and stagecoaches, a contingent of El Jebel members in fez hats driving miniature vehicles, musical groups, and hopefully no literature bearing politicians. All the entries go out of their way to compete for the coveted silver trays honoring the Best of the West in different categories. Kids line both sides of Washington St. to cheer on the marchers and of course, gather up the candy that is handed out. Adults eagerly await local band, Blu Jazz, to see what zany theme they've come up with this year.
Mark your calendar for the entire weekend celebration beginning at 5PM on Friday, July 26th but don't miss the parade on Saturday. Come early and stuff yourself at the Fire Department's Pancake Breakfast on 10th St, then saunter over to Washington Avenue and grab a prime viewing spot.
One thing the parade needs is a lot of volunteers to help with the staging and line-up. Interested in helping out? If so, contact the Buffalo Bill Days Committee at 303-384-0003 or via email at goldenbuffalobilldays@msn.com.
