Triathlon to be held in memory of Bear Creek grad
Contributed by: Jack Collins on 7/18/2008

In September 2007, Rebecca Yarberry was killed in an automobile accident. She was on her way to physical therapy on her ankle in preparation for a triathlon. She had already qualified for one national at Lake Tahoe and was working on a second.

A triathlon will be held in Avon, Colo., on Aug. 2, and is the first in memory of Becky. All proceeds will be given to CURE International to help their work around the world. Teams are welcome and volunteers are needed. For more information about the triathlon or to register, go to www.bectri.com.

Much has been written about Becky -- her life in Vail, her work with the Colorado Mountain Medical Group, her love for children, her faith and her strong desire to help those who need help, particularly those who cannot afford to help themselves. This desire led to two visits to Honduras with a small group of medical people to treat children who could not otherwise receive help.

Major donations by groups and individuals were given in her memory to CURE International, a nonprofit organization that was responsible for Becky's visits to Honduras. These donations allowed CURE International to construct a pediatric addition to a hospital in Honduras in her honor that will carry her name. Members of Becky's family, including her mother and stepfather Margie and Bob Schoedel, brother Ryan Yarberry, all of Littleton, and grandparents Jack and Evie Collins, of Lakewood, are planning to attend the dedication of the hospital wing later this year.

Becky was born in 1979 and spent her young days in Lakewood, graduating from Bear Creek High School and Colorado State University and then moving to Vail. During her early years, she sang with the Colorado Children's Choral. When becoming a "grad" of that group, she worked with the directors to train the young people and acted as a den mother on out-of-town trips. She also was an active members of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps.

Jack Collins is a Lakewood resident and grandfather of Becky Yarberry.
