Waisting Away
Contributed by: Heagie Lee on 5/25/2006

So you're thinking that you've heard all about this issue, and expect me to ramble on about information you already have read about thousands of times. However, this worn out topic can not be stressed enough.

In the United States alone, 5-10 million people suffer from the horrific disease known as anorexia nervosa. Girls as young as twelve are being sucked into this grueling world crammed with selef-criticism.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live a life that involves an enormous selft-hatred? Individuals suffering from anorexia live with guilt, hatred, and nervousness every single day.

Carrie wakes up, never getting enough rest, and heads to the bathroom. The numbers on the scale never seem to satisfy her. Looking in the mirror that has become her enemy, she scrutinizes her body to the full extent. Her eyes glide over the protuding bones, focusing on the "fat" that needs to be lost.

At the breakfast table, the guilt turns onto overdrive. The parental unit looks at her encouraging her to fill her stomach with the sickening contents that fill the plate. The excuses are now running low. Leaving her plate untouched, she exits the house and heads for the gym, where she spends most of her days.

The glimpse of this created world may shock you, but for people suffering with anorexia, it is a part of their everyday life. The world that may seem as unreal is in fact, a reality. Therefore, it it imperative for today's society to come together and help the suffering individuals.
