Planet Fitness shapes up Lakewood
Contributed by: Clark Stevens on 4/3/2008

Lakewood is shaping up with a new fitness center that opened Feb. 1.

Planet Fitness, located at 3265 S. Wadsworth Blvd., prides itself on being a "judgment free" fitness center, said Clark Stevens, co-owner of Planet Fitness.

"Planet Fitness is a non-intimidating, judgment-free zone," Clark said. "We want everybody and anybody who has not been in a gym to be totally comfortable walking in our doors and not feel as though it is a meat market, or that it is only for people who are already into fitness."

Clark and his daughter, Emily Stevens, co-owner of Planet Fitness and who has a degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotions, had thought about opening a fitness center for several years.

After visiting several trade shows, Clark and Emily liked the philosophy behind Planet Fitness, he said.

"I liked Planet Fitness' business model and while I've been in business and have known that end of it for sometime, I liked the idea of partnering Emily's experience with a company that's growing rapidly, and has a well defined mission" Clark said.

Lakewood was Clark and Emily's first choice in opening their fitness center, Clark said. Lakewood is a vibrant community with a demographic of the type of people that would join a Planet Fitness community, he explained.

Bill Mulleady, Vice President for Planet Fitness franchises, said one thing that makes Planet Fitness successful is that it is a low-cost model with state-of-the-art equipment.

"We also gear our fitness clubs to general fitness so you're not going to find racquetball and basketball courts or swimming pools," Mulleady said. "What you will find is that our clubs have a minimum of 160 pieces of equipment and no-commitment memberships for $10 a month.

Emily added that the club offers free group personal training, and that we pride ourselves on keeping our gym spotlessly clean. We're also pleased that our free pizza nights and free bagel mornings have been a big hit.

The response from Lakewood members has been better than expected, Clark said.

"The people that we have reached out to us so far are overwhelming impressed with what we're doing," Clark said.
