Trick or Treating - for Canned Food!
Contributed by: Debra Morter on 10/24/2005

Patrick Morter, age 9 and Jayci Mueller, age 7 have been neighbors and friends for 3 years.  They have attended Molholm Elementary in Lakewood for their entire academic lives. They are both in the Advanced Learning Program, and as part of that program, it is suggested that they involve themselves in a community project. Being kids themselves, they wanted to do something for other kids - especially kids that needed a little help.  And what is more basic than needing food?

This year, with a little help from parents and friends and school staff, they are spearheading a grassroots movement throughout their school.  They are inviting their classmates to Trick or Treat for Canned Food to benefit the Jeffco Action Center.  The food bank is in desperate need of canned, boxed and bagged non perishable foods, particularly protein foods and beans.  It is the goal for these great kids to bring in 4,000 lbs of food through this effort, which will feed hundreds of families.

Flyers and identifying badges will be passed out to classrooms on Thursday, October 27. The classroom that gathers the most food will be rewarded by a pizza party, and the second place classroom will get an ice cream party.

As Patrick wrote in the speech he is preparing for Thursday, "We may be just kids.  But kids care, and together, we can make a difference."
