What's the fuss about Halloween?
Contributed by: Cindy Catanese on 10/18/2007

Halloween!

The very word sends young and old into various degrees of frenzy.

What is all the fuss about?

Why has Halloween become the second largest retail holiday in the U.S.?

Where does it come from?

The celebration of Halloween knows no age or religion boundaries. One can find origins of the holiday in practically every ethnic group in the world. Most give attention to the changing of the seasons and acknowledge a link to the "other" world, using this time to reflect upon the possible ties of the living and the dead.

As the owner of a large retail store that entices Halloween-lovers and provides services and products for all aspects of Halloween, I often question what the fuss is about. I listen to what customers want and wonder what makes them buy certain items. I watch children screech with delight when Mom buys them a scary costume or a giant laser sword to carry trick or treating. I snicker when an elderly gentleman who barely cracks a smile buys a goofy mask and wonder just who he is going to fool.

The scenarios are endless in a costume shop and each day presents a new batch of interesting folks who lead completely different lives, but who have one thing in common - the desire to have fun, act silly and - once a year - be someone they'd never be in real life. That's what the fuss is all about.
