Love in a homeless shelter
Contributed by: Jennifer Guy on 2/12/2007

The year was 1998 and I was just a semester out of college. I had enjoyed volunteering in college, so when my sister, Katy, suggested that we volunteer in the playroom of Samaritan House Homeless Shelter, I was all for it. We had only been there a few weeks when we came in one evening and there was no one to let us into the playroom. After looking around for a while we found a tall, good looking staff member named Corky. He lent us his keys so we could get started. As soon as we let ourselves in to the play room I turned to Katy and said, "He's cute and you have a boyfriend, so I get to take the keys back to him."

As the weeks passed I looked forward more and more to the time I spent at the shelter, needless to say it wasn't just because of the kids. For his part he seemed to find more and more reasons to hang out in the playroom. Finally on March 10, 1998 I went to the playroom as usual and I was peed on, thrown up on and sneezed on. For whatever reason, that was the day he chose to ask for my number. As soon as we got to the car Katy said, "I will so laugh at you if you date a guy named Corky." Seven months later I was able to ask her what she would do if I married a guy named Corky.

Although things have not always been easy, we have chosen to take the world on together. My life has been better for having this man in it. Knowing all that I know now I would choose him again for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse. I had always been a firm believer that you get more than you give when you volunteer, but I had never known how true that would end up being.
