Leader of the pack: I met him at a candy store
Contributed by: Chrisann Winiecki on 2/10/2007

Just like in the old Shangri-Las song, "Leader of the Pack," I met him in a candy store.

I was the manager of a downtown candy store (part of a chain) and he was this tall, goofy, silly guy who came in almost every weekday afternoon to buy maple creams.
He always seemed to come in when we were busy, and usually threw out a few flippant little remarks to entertain the crowd. He was funny and charming, but we never exchanged more than a few words.

Were there sparks? No, not really. I was 40 years old, never married and had basically given up on romance---and marriage. To be honest, I was well aware that my best years were behind me. I was coming to terms with the fact that I was probably going to be alone for the rest of my life. Not a happy picture, but I had accepted it and was trying to soldier on.

I think the fact that I was somewhat relaxed about my fate (okay, let's just say that I was no longer desperate!) made me more attractive to men--because suddenly I began getting dates like crazy. Nobody special, but at least a chance to get out, go to dinner or a movie, or for drinks.

Then one night I was alone in the candy store and the strangest wave of melancholy hit me--to the point that I almost burst into tears. I remember looking out the window and just saying, "Please God, just give me one more chance at love. Just one."

Not 10 minutes later David walked into the store and asked me out to dinner. He later told me that he felt COMPELLED to cross the street and ask me out.

Weird, but true--every word of it.

Of course I accepted and on the second date I called my mother and told her that I was going to marry him. She was so surprised that she dropped the phone, but I was sure. I KNEW.

It happened that fast--all the goofy, heart-singing happiness that I had ever hoped and dreamed about. And it happened for him, too.

Within three months we were engaged and within six months we were married. We just celebrated our 13th anniversary.

Has it always been smooth? No. But my heart STILL lifts when I hear his voice on the telephone and there's nobody better when it comes to holding hands. He's so much a part of me now that I can't imagine life without him.

I am the luckiest woman on the planet.
