Lakewood Meridian celebrates 20th anniversary
On 5/19/2008
Contributed by: Terri Kent on 5/16/2008

Lakewood Meridian Retirement Community, a continuing care community, celebrates its twentieth anniversary with its 188 residents, the week of May 19th with a champagne reception, a dance followed by a candlelight and wine dinner, a lecture by Active Minds, a picnic luncheon, an antique car show, and horse-drawn carriage rides.

It will also be a time to honor four residents still living independently (and quite actively) who were among the first to move in twenty years ago: Helen Bethel, Joe Hamilton, Maudie Keepers, and Evelyn Thede. Lakewood Meridian has 101 independent apartments, 13 assisted services apartments and a 58-bed nursing home, nestled into a neighborhood setting at 1805 South Balsam Street. The beautifully landscaped ten-acre site, which boasts two ponds, a stream, walking paths and a putting green, is often cited by residents as a deciding factor in choosing Lakewood Meridian over other facilities.

Meridian Retirement Communities was developed over twenty years ago by architect Ralph Nagel, who felt a need existed for first-class communities with services and amenities which would enhance seniors' abilities to live independently and continue to grow as individuals. Boulder Meridian was the first community built and opened, with Lakewood not far behind. Later, properties were acquired which became Arvada Meridian, Westland Meridian, and Englewood Meridian.

Services include the dining program, housekeeping and linen services, maintenance-free living, transportation, optional health services, and a wide variety of events and programs to stimulate the mind, exercise the body, and provide easy opportunities to make new friends. Over the years, thousands of satisfied seniors have called the Meridians "home". In 2005, Mr. Nagel retired himself. Now owned by ING and Chartwell Senior Communities (the largest owner/operator of senior living properties in Canada) and managed by Horizon Bay Management out of Tampa, the Meridians continue to expand their programs to benefit their residents.

Local businesses such as King Soopers, Wadsworth Liquors, White Fence Farm, Gung Ho Cleaners, Country Club Flowers, Baker Auction and Estate Sales, Colorado Hi-Tec Movers, Real Estate Agent Sandy Hewins, Signal Graphics, Active Minds, Confident Dental and Landscape Consultants are a few of those contributing prizes for the residents in gratitude for the patronage of Lakewood Meridian's residents and staff for all these years.

Terri Kent is the executive director of Lakewood Meridian.
