Lakewood's hometown jewelers are making news again as the recipient of the West Chamber's 2007 Member of the Year award. This award recognizes the small business that best advanced the West Chamber's mission of improving the business environment of Jefferson County in 2007. The award will be presented at the West Chamber's Chairman's Inaugural Celebration on Jan. 25 at the Sheraton Denver West hotel.
In business since 1974, the family owned and operated Purvis Jewelers is the oldest jewelry store in Lakewood. Owners
John
and
Pam Purvis
both graduated from Jefferson County schools and raised three children (two sons and a daughter) here. Their children are grown now and have provided them with four grandchildren.
Purvis Jewelers manages to survive in a market dominated by large national jewelry chains by specializing in outstanding customer service and passing on the savings of lower overhead and advertising costs to their customers.
However, Purvis Jewelers is best known for their custom design work, especially in the area of colored diamond jewelry. John's skill in custom design has netted him numerous jewelry design contest awards including the international DeBeers Diamonds of Today award and the Jewelers of America grand prize. For the past two years, John has won the Rocky Mountain Jewelers Design Contest.
As leaders in their field, John and Pam have both served in jewelry trade organizations. Both have served as past Presidents of the American Gem Society's Rocky Mountain Guild. John also served as President of the Rocky Mountain Jewelers and both are members of the Retail Jewelers Organization (RJO).
In addition to their leadership in their business field, the Purvis family is also being recognized for their contributions to the community. Purvis Jewelers is a member of the West Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. As a company, Purvis Jewelers has donated custom design jewelry to support local charities such as the Jefferson Foundation, Bridgeway and Kiwanis as well as the Sundancer fundraiser for Our Lady of Fatima school. Individually, John and Pam are members of the Lakewood Kiwanis Club as well as serve on Lakewood's West Colfax Advisory Committee.
Despite all these accomplishments, they still manage to find time to have fun. John has the unusual hobby of performing in a local rock and roll band. As a teenager, John wanted to be a rock star. After a 30 year hiatus, John fulfilled his dream by playing guitar in the local rock band "Look Both Ways."
Whether as a leader in the jewelry business, serving the community or making music, the Purvis family is a truly a bright gem in Lakewood's crown jewels. For more information about Purvis Jewelers, call 303-233-2798 or visit www.purvisjewelers.com or visit their offices at 9190 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood.
