Bubbly and modest are two words to describe Green Mountain High School senior and second place winner of the YourHub.com High School Journalism contest,
Courtney Krebs
.
Krebs, 18, received a $250 check from YourHub.com and recognition for her piece about
Jan Strand
, the network administrator for Green Mountain High School, who endured a traumatic surgery to remove a benign brain tumor.
Strand credits finding the tumor to a Chinese orphan, whom Strand and her husband planned to adopt and were traveling overseas to fill out the paperwork. Strand said if it weren't for the mandatory physical she had to have before going abroad, she would never have known about the tumor.
"It doesn't matter that I won," Krebs said. "I'm more pleased about the story being told."
Krebs received an assignment from her school's newspaper's sponsor about Strand and spoke with her prior to her surgery and shortly after, late last year.
Even though the story was assigned to her, Krebs said it was the "most fantastic assignment" she received.
After Krebs had written the article for school, she said her mother encouraged her to enter the YourHub.com High School Journalism contest.
As for her $250 award money, Krebs said, "I should probably save it and use it for college."
And approaching Green Mountain's May 26 graduation, Krebs said she is a little stressed, given that she is one of 13 valedictorians at her school and she will be giving a speech.
Krebs plans to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder this fall to study journalism. She is unsure whether she wants to go into print or broadcast journalism, but said she would "be happy doing so many things."
