Former Lakewood resident, beloved grandma dies
On 3/4/2008
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 3/11/2008

Dorothy Jean Cook Feese, fondly known to friends and family as Dot, passed away March 4 at the age of 79. Although Dorothy spent the last years of her life living in Buena Vista, she lived in Lakewood for 42 years.

Dorothy was born to James and Viola Cook in Sterling, Colo., on Oct. 26, 1928. Her early life as the daughter of a career linesman for the Public Service Company of Colorado included moves to multiple Colorado locations. The Cook family ultimately settled permanently in Denver, where Dorothy attended South High School and met her future husband, Francis L. Feese.

Dorothy and Francis were married in 1948 and moved to Wray, Colo., which provided the young couple an opportunity to start their family while Francis grew his music teaching career.

The family moved to Lakewood in 1958. Dorothy and Francis had a house built on Glennon Drive, where they raised their four children. All their children attended Lakewood High School.

The Lakewood home, which Dorothy lived in for 38 years, holds nostalgic memories for Dorothy's children and grandchildren alike. The basement was often lively with the sounds of Francis' band jamming. The sprawling back yard was perfect for games of hide-and-seek and tag. Dorothy was an avid gardener and she filled the yard with rows of beautiful flowers.

During their years in Lakewood, Dorothy pursued her career as homemaker as Francis moved successfully into Denver's thriving jazz music scene. Dorothy and Francis teamed up professionally in the late 1960s to found Young World Publications, a music publishing company specializing in school band and orchestra music composed by Francis. The Feese couple successfully operated the company in partnership with their daughter until Francis' death in 1995.

Dorothy was a selfless caregiver, unconditionally devoted to her family. An animal lover, she took pleasure in doting on her dogs.

Dorothy is survived by daughter Carole; sons Richard, Robert and Douglas; and grandchildren Erin, Christopher, Sean, Lindsey and Whitney.

Family and friends will celebrate Dorothy's life with a luncheon service on March 13 at El Rancho in Evergreen.
