A Highlands Ranch triathlon turned out to be a very special event for one Lakewood couple June 2.
Scott Caruso
proposed to
Kathleen Smith,
his girlfriend of three years, after she crossed the finish line of the Highlands Ranch Community Association Tune Up Sprint Triathlon, held at the Recreation Center at Westridge, 9650 S. Foothills Canyon Blvd., in Highlands Ranch.
As Caruso was running alongside Smith toward the finish line, the announcer told the crowd something special was about to happen. Once across the finish line, Caruso put a lei around her neck and got down on one knee to pop the question. She said of course, and they immediately hugged and kissed each other.
"Two of my biggest passions are her and triathlons," Caruso said.
Caruso said they plan to get married next spring.
Caruso finished the triathlon at 1:09:46.8, and Smith finished at 1:45:59.8.
The Tune Up Sprint Triathlon consisted of a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.
The triathlon was part of the annualHighlands Ranch Run Series. The next run is the July 4th Independence Day 10K on July 4 at the Highlands Ranch Town Center, 9730 Ridgeline Blvd.
