A 20 Year Volunteer Service Award was given to Fred Zastrow by Policy Chief Ron Burns at the Annual Police Awards Ceremony.
Fred Zastrow started volunteering with the Lakewood Policy Department in December 1986 and spent his early volunteer years manning the police front desk during evening hours. It did not take Fred long to become friends with the agents who worked Watch II. In fact, any area of the department that Fred assisted in, the staff members developed a strong friendship with Fred. On his original volunteer application he listed as one of his skills that would be helpful as a volunteer "Good with People." That has proven to be an understatement.
Fred has assisted the Victim Advocates by making follow-up calls to burglary victims for many years where his gentle, caring way offered comfort to many burglary victims. He has helped in the Property Unit, the Professional Standards Section, the School Resource Officers and the Volunteer Office. He has volunteered with the Volunteer Surveillance Team's Property Pickup team and the Handicap Parking Enforcement team. Wherever there is a need or a task to be done, Fred is willing to step in and lend a hand.
In addition to his volunteer services for the Lakewood Police Department, Fred also volunteered with the Hospice of St. Johns for many years where he visited with patients and handed out mail in addition to answering the front desk phones. Fred also worked full time as a barber until 2003.
Despite some severe health problems in late August of 2005, Fred has continued to give freely of his time and talents in any way possible to serve the citizens of Lakewood as a neighborhood watch block captain, and to serve the Police Department through his weekly volunteer activities. Fred is truly loved by his many friends within the Department.
Fred lives in Lakewood with his wife. They have six children and nine grandchildren. Fred and Family moved to Lakewood in 1970 from the Denver area. Fred served as a medic in the Korean War.
I am pleased to honor Fred for his twenty years of service with a plaque which reads, "Successful is the person who leaves the world better than they found it, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves."
Alison Wolf is the daughter of Fred Zastrow.
