Juanita Dubois proves that age is only a number
- especially if you are young at heart.
Juanita and her husband,
Andrew, have been volunteering at McLain since
shortly after the school moved into their new building in 2000. At
first they helped in the office and library, but in 2002 they
volunteered to help tutor adult students.
While Andrew tutors students in math, Juanita tutors English as
a second language to students striving to improve their reading and
pronunciation skills. Her students have read such classics as
Huckleberry Finn and
The King and I.
Juanita attended business school in her youth and worked as a
secretary before her first marriage. She has a daughter from that
marriage plus two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She
lost her first husband in 1992 and remarried in 1995 to Andrew.
Besides tutoring, Juanita knits and sews baby clothes for the
Jeffco Action Center's layette project. She is also a caller for
ArtReach and volunteers at the Arvada Center for Humanities and the
Arts.
Her philosophy is: "If you don't stay active, you will lose your
abilities." She puts her philosophy into practice every day.
