The City of Lakewood and the Department of Community Resources will celebrate Earth Day 2008 with a variety of events taking place between Saturday, April 12 and Saturday, April 26.
On Saturday, April 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will make the difference at Bear Creek Lake Park, 15600 W. Morrison Rd., by building bridges, restoring habitat, and constructing and maintaining trails. Mayor
Bob Murphy
will welcome volunteers and Great Harvest Bread will provide breakfast. To volunteer, register online through event sponsor REI at
www.voutdoors.org
or call 303-697-6157 for more information.
On Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the City of Lakewood Urban Parks division will be giving away free tree seedlings and seeds at Whole Foods Market Belmar at 444 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Park staff will be handing out information and answering questions on water consumption and other landscaping issues. They will also have perennials on display that will be offered for sale at the yearly plant sale at the Lakewood greenhouse on Saturday, May 3. Whole Foods will donate five percent of the total April 22 store sales to the renovation of Ray Ross Park located at 680 S. Harlan St.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22 at City Council Chambers, 480 S. Allison Pkwy, join us for a lively discussion regarding what the New Energy Economy means for Front Range communities. The event will be moderated by Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy. Short presentations will be given by the Governor's Energy Office and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).
ArtVentures, the City of Lakewood's outreach program, will partner with the Jefferson County Public Library's Knott's Kids program to create custom-designed and experiential artwork from natural and found materials. Knott's Kids will travel to Jefferson County Public Library locations between April 2 and May 13. On April 12, at the Belmar Library, kids and parents will build a standing ring made of branches from nearby parks. On April 26, kids and parents will create mobiles from recycled materials at the Lakewood Library. The pieces will be on display for up to three months to show the effects of the environment on the artwork.
Over 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day in 1970, and it is now observed each year by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries. Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Lakewood, ArtVentures, Jefferson County Public Library and Whole Foods, and make a difference in our city, state, country and planet.
