Bear Creek students claim belongings from school
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 4/28/2008

Bear Creek High School students waited anxiously in line April 28 for their turn to pick up belongings that were left behind when the school's small gym caught fire April 22.

Crews have been busy since April 23 emptying lockers and cleaning items before they were returned to students. Classes resumed April 29, with half the students attending school in the morning and the other half in the afternoon, since only about 75 percent of the building is usable due to smoke damage.

"Students are anxious to be back," said Bear Creek principal Phyllis Emrich.

Since a fire can give off many chemical by-products, students were urged to discard medications, lotions, perfume, makeup, food and drinks that may have be affected by smoke, according to a Jeffco release sent home with students.

Two 15-year-old Bear Creek students have been arrested in connection with the fire.

Although Emrich couldn't comment too much on the pending case, she said, "It's discouraging. As you can see, we're in major upheaval around here."
