Lakewood Wal-Mart Supercenter Recycling Event on May 16
Wal-Mart announced a series of events in its stores that will encourage consumers to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
Among the locations hosting the recycling promotion is the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 7455 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood on Friday, May 16, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The events are part of an eight week program developed in partnership with The Pepsi Bottling Group (PBG) and Rocky Mountain Recycling that will stretch throughout Colorado. In total, 57 Wal-Mart stores from across the state will participate.
The program - titled "Go Green. Get Stuff. Give Back" - will ask consumers to bring recyclable bottles and cans to participating Wal-Mart locations. The containers will be collected and picked up by Rocky Mountain Recycling, Wal-Mart's recycling partner. Proceeds from all of the recycled bottles and cans will be donated to Children's Miracle Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children's hospitals across North America. The Children's Hospital of Denver, with a total of 14 locations, will be the beneficiary of the funds raised.
In addition, consumers who participate in the events will receive free Pepsi Stuff points, part of a current Pepsi promotion in which points can be collected and redeemed for valuable prizes. There will also be opportunities to win Pepsi Recycled Blankets, trips, and other giveaways.
"Wal-Mart is proud to be partnering with Pepsi and Rocky Mountain Recycling on this community-wide effort," said
Joshua Phair
, public affairs manager for Wal-Mart. "It's a good reminder for everyone on how recycling and other small changes in our daily lives can make a big difference."
"This is a terrific initiative that we're delighted to be a part of. It brings many parts of our community together to benefit the environment and give to children in need, two incredibly important causes that we all have an obligation to serve," said
Margaret Gramann
, Senior Vice President and General Manager of PBG's Great West Business Unit. "We hope that by presenting this information in a fun and relevant way we can encourage more consumers throughout Colorado to recycle with regularity."
A commitment to recycling can have a significant impact on the environment. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television set for three hours. A can that is recycled can be back on the store shelf in just 60 days, and it requires 95 percent less energy and generates 95 percent less emissions than manufacturing a new can. Recycling five PET bottles yields enough fiber for one extra-large t-shirt, one square foot of carpet, or one ski jacket's filling. (* see footnote)
In addition to offering 100 percent recyclable packaging, the Pepsi system has also taken a number of steps in recent years to make its products more environmentally friendly. For example, a half-liter bottle of Aquafina, the company's bottled water brand, is made with 35 percent less plastic today than in 2000, saving over 45 million pounds of plastic per year.
